Hòn Mun's reef became Vietnam's first marine protected area in 2001, a pilot zone drawn across roughly 160 square kilometres of Nha Trang Bay. Surveys inside it catalogued about 350 species of hard coral — close to three-quarters of every hard coral species known to science.
Two years later the bay was admitted to the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. Nine islands sit within its arc: Hòn Tre, Hòn Mun, Hòn Tằm, Hòn Một, Hòn Miễu and a scatter of smaller outcrops that break the swell before it reaches the mainland.
The water carried a narrower economy first. Fishing hamlets on Hòn Miễu and Hòn Tằm worked anchovy, squid and swiftlet-nest grounds, the last a royal concession on the cliffs of Hòn Nội. Cham settlements held this coast from the seventh century, and the Po Nagar towers above the Cái River still face the channel those boats used. Salt pans and nước mắm fermentation yards lined the shore. Wooden hulls were built for nets, not for passengers.
Conversion came quickly. Concrete berths at Cầu Đá replaced timber jetties, dive ladders and sun decks were bolted onto fishing boats, and by the mid-2000s the fleet had reinvented itself as a tour đảo Nha Trang operation selling island-hopping boat trips by the day.
